Defensiveness ( Part 2)

By: Chitra Raman (Guest IP 68.62.24.173) on 27-07-2010 08:56

(Continued from Part 1) But I live in a majority white neighborhood. I live in a metropolitan area that has been savagely hit by unemployment -- everyone knows someone who is out of work. Under the outward veneer of civility, lurks resentment and “freakification” of Indians for any number of reasons (outsourcing, our kids get better grades, we worship weird multi-limbed gods, we let our parents visit and stay with us for , horror of horrors, not weeks but months ).

Defensiveness( Part 3 )

( Continued from Part 2 ) So the point is not that Edisonians are victims, or all uniformly glorious. The point is that in the current climate of xenophobia and economic disenfranchisement, TIME and Stein showed extremely poor judgment. And Indians who brush it off thinking --That's okay, he was only making fun of Gujaratis, not Tamilians or Bengalis or Malayalis -- or, I'M not like that so it doesn't affect ME -- are missing an essential point.

Thank you Venkat.

I just got through emailing a response to someone who said some people might find me excessively defensive. He’s right, but those readers are part of the reason I wrote this.

I have a dear friend who lives right in the middle of Edison, NJ. She told me she was not offended, that she thought Stein was trying to be funny, and she personally has not encountered overt racism from whites -- at least, not more racism than from our own people! And I believe her. (Continued)

Good comments Chitra. I do agree that with you that other communities would not have taken it lying down. Would he have written this about our friends across the border?
By now a fatwa would have been out on him.
